BRIDGES STITCHED TO THE LAND

The, “Change Climate Change” project I received within the scope of the ARCH401 Architectural Design Studio course is an urban scale project with the conceptual background knowledge. The site I am working on during the semester is bordered by Ankara Stream, Atatürk Orman Çiftliği, and Ankamall Shopping Center. Ankara Stream is one of the dominant site forces in the field. Ankara Stream has a curvilinear structure forming the northern border of the site. With the ecological perspective required by the term project, in order to purify the water of the stream and increase the speed of the stream, I directed the stream perpendicular to the endpoint of the site starting from Akköprü and stepped the water channel to increase the rate of water. In the new case, the water channel passes through the middle of the site. The Water Treatment Center also influenced the program as it was effective in the water design concept as a strong reference, and the pools were created at some points because it was necessary for the treatment center. Later on, in the design process, I designed the structures as a way to cross over the stream and actually transform into bridge structures because the water channel it divides the site into the middle. These bridge structures do not make a single linear point transition from within the building. It is also designed to provide transition facilities with circulation elements as the new bridge and terrace structure between the buildings. In my collage work, the lines between the structures show not only the existing transition movement elements but also the potential ones. In other words, the passage paths begin to stitch bridge structures and bridge between many points. When these lines become thicker, their spatial properties increase; for example, turning into the terraces of view. This is why the lines thicken. Some lines are faded. The fading of the lines expresses the passing passages and possible passages. There is a stitch. In addition, ecological conditions have been considered in the proposed pools for the treatment center. For example; When the pools are full, it can be a place where swimming activity is done. When the water in the ponds is taken, the pool becomes an activity amphitheater and becomes the event space. At this point, the reference architect Bernard Tschumi was the one I saw in the process.

Bernard Tschumi has an unstructured project in 1988 in Bridge City. The Bridge City project has 4 main bridges. Due to the topographical features of Lausanne, they connect the two tops and extend along a valley. It is an infrastructural project for Lausanne. “The individual programs applied to each of the four bridges give each a special character that allows the built-in bridge to function as an urban generator. The concept of a city generator not only provides the opportunity to create new spatial connections within the existing city but also encourages unpredictable programmatic factors or new urban events (Bernard Tschumi Architects, Projects 31, Bridge City Lausanne,1988).” The urban generator concept has been quite effective for me as it is in the Bridge City project. So with the reference, I received from Tschumi, I foresee these bridges to create new spatial connections within the existing city and encourage new urban events. The fact that places and passages that define movement are remarkable in my project to have encouraged me to produce an image in this way. However, another reference I received from Tschumi was the color of red that Bernard Tschumi used in his collages and visualizations. In my collage work, I used my structures and stitch transitions between them. In addition, the Bridge City project connects the two parts of the valley, but there is no transition between the bridges. There are also transitions between the bridge structures in my project and shown in my collage work. I recommend a versatile movement while Tschumi only recommends a one-way linear movement. Speaking of movement, Tschumi presented the trio notation system with The Manhattan Transcript.  “The purpose of the tripartite mode of notations (events, movements, spaces) is to introduce the order of experience, the order of time – movements, intervals – sequences – for inevitably intervene in the reading of the city (Jencks, C., Kropf, K., Theories and Manifestos of Contemporary Architecture, Bernard Tschumi The Manhattan Transcripts, p.277).” What I refer to from the triple notation was the shaping of the spaces of the movements. When the movements were linear, the spaces were linearly bridge structures. Then these bridge structures are connected and stitched to each other again with linear passages. As a result, different directional linear movement possibilities overlapped, in fact, the linear movement is blurred. Linear movement moved from a two-dimensional movement to three-dimensional movements. Based on the in time intervals a concept of Tschumi, I applied a design according to time in the pools I designed. As I have seen in the image is full of swimming pools are used as swimming activities. When the water level in the ponds goes down, a new place arises and this place is being used for other activities. Changes in time affect the design. The linear movement spaces and lines between the bridge structures begin to relate the spaces which are not in the same bridge structures. Spaces are not working alone so, they are working together. This inevitably affects the quality of the spaces. In other words, the inference we can make is that the movement has a spatial value. We stitch the spaces with the movement lines on the city and produce new urban generators. These urban generators aim to increase the movement possibilities of the city, its spatial quality and the possibility of the program.

To sum up, the architect Bernard Tschumi is the reference for me in my visualization of the ARCH471 course. The Bridge City project he designed for Lausanne was a very effective reference for both my studio course and my Visual Culture course. Color code, movement – time-space – event ideas and their connections in particular points are affected my projects.
